Reading the other reviews, you either love it or hate it here. Me, I'm on the "not love" side. But the locals love it! And many people have told me they drive from Lebanon to eat here. Why???? Food is a step below diner grade to me. Ate a cheeseteak there and it was terrible. Ordered a hamburger and that's what I got. No fries, no sides, nothing on the burger. I didn't realize you had to specify these things. My fault. Salads are piles of cheap iceberg lettuce. If it's healthy you're looking for don't come here. Everything is fried or drenched in grease. Cheap and lots of it--well then come here. For me I'll pay a little more and keep on driving.

This was where I first fell in love with French Onion Soup. Grab a crock, seriously. Aside from their FOS, the food here is what you would refer to as "home cooking" - I mean, you're in the middle of pig farms in Pennsylvania, this is pretty much par for the course. Portions are big and heavy. Like many other restaurants in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, casual dress is a-ok.

The food is of the rural home-cooked variety, and it's better than you might expect from looking at the place. With a vast menu to choose from, you're bound to find something you like. Portions are generous. I highly recommend the filet mignon.

Wholesome, Hearty, local PA Dutch cooking at its best. Its a great local restaurant that of course is frequented mostly by the locals. I would highly recommend the passer by not from these parts to stop in. If you're a down to earth person you'll fit right in and enjoy the cuisine here. I personally really like the Deep Fried Pork Chop dinner with a side salad with hot bacon dressing and the potato filling with gravy. I also LOVE their Chicken Pot Pie. (This is Pennsylvania .... its not in a pie crust, that's a Chicken Pie) And for as far away from Philly as this place is I am very pleasantly surprised by how great their cheese steak is. Be adventurous and get it with the sauce, I really like it!. ALWAYS save room for dessert as their cakes and pies never disappoint. And be sure to get yourself an ice cold Birch Beer, poured from a tap and served in a glass mug. This here is what Pennsylvania is all about.

I was Extremely disappointed last evening when my 2 sisters & I made our first trip to Red Lion Cafe. It was only 5:00 PM when we arrived. The first thing we were told was that there was no pot pie - well, since that was what had been recommended to us, that's exactly what we wanted to eat. Our server went to the kitchen to see if there was any to be had, only to return to our table and say it would be some time before more was available. We were quite unhappy at that point - when we decided to leave instead of waiting, there was no suggestion of a free drink/appetizer to appease us while we waited. She stepped back & let us walk out. We went to another restaurant & Red Lion Cafe lost our business & made some unhappy customers.

This place has been around a long time and it is traditional for a quaint dinner with your family. They have a large selection of food on the menu, and daily specials which can include local ethnic dishes. I have tried the chicken pot pie, which is Pennsylvania Dutch style, and it was very good. The service here has always been prompt and friendly.

Boneless pork chops. Beef barley soup. Fresh bread. Fries... Simple home-style foods, but they do them very skillfully. It's in the middle of nowhere, very back woodsy, but the friendly staff and quality and quantity of the foods make it worth a visit.

Excellent food and super service. Hot roast beef with fries is a hearty meal. Now serving craft beers from local breweries. Homemade pies and cakes made daily on the premises. Lisa and Sue ... great waitress .Luv these gals.

Delicious food, friendly service- worth a detour on our way home to Maryland! Pizza was yummy. Gluten free bread was a pleasant surprise for my daughter-in-law.

The broasted chicken is the way to go. We always stop here on our way through town. It is a local restaurant where you will never leave hungry. The portions are huge and everything is delicious-not to mention the exceptional price tag. If you can save room for dessert, the peanut butter cake is delicious as are all of their treats, you really can't go wrong. Excellent value, excellent food, and friendly service!

Dish I liked: Everything! I'm a Philly girl on a mission up here in pine grove. Packed all my meals but drove by this mountain cafe noticing the packed parking lot in a not so packed town. Figured it must be worth it if that many people are eating out on a country life budget, or the bars packed and typically there's a country town full of drunks. Well it wasn't for the bar, not that it's not cozy there too but this lil gem was oh so worth the stop! Being spoiled from a foodie town, the French onion soup was to die for. Single serving soup not being a usual shared dish still had my hubby (a well travelled foodie) dipping his homemade bread into my broth once he finished his own. Followed by the superstar which gets 5 out of 5 stars for a sandwich - not on Philly bread mind you- and a rack of ribs drenched in a tangy/ flavorful but not overwhelming sauce sided by a very close second best perogies this polish girl has ever had soaked in butter and caramelized onion then followed up with a chocolate fix fixer of the peanut butter iced chocolate cake and the very best coconut cream homemade pie myself And my husband has ever had. When I say the best I can honestly say we are all for loving something and leaving it but we both fought the plate for this one and took one to go. I grew up around the corner from Stock's bakery which is now in my eyes garbage compared to this treat! And my southern grown hubby who has traveled the world in pursuit of all things key lime/ lemon meringue and coconut cream and never finishes nor consistently orders dessert was asking for a take home pie by the second bite. The "service" and even the "how we started" story in the menu as well as their mission statement to serve decent food at an affordable cost with a happy work environment was just the icing on the cake. Friendly service, smiles all around, definitely worth your time and money, (and an insanely cheap meal I might add). Do not pass by without trying. This Philly girl will be back!

There are ton of good reviews here so I will just say a few things. The broasted chicken is excellent. The pork and sauerkraut special on Thursday is a favorite. To bad Thursday is only once a week. Meals come with a choice of 2 or 3 sides. A nice big list of choices! Rice Pudding is listed as a vegetable. I always get rice pudding as one of my veggies. The service is always very good even during the busiest hours. The parking lot is across the street so you get a little exercise coming and going.
